More Snow!

Hello everyone!

Well, it seems that Friday updates are going to start turning into Monday updates if we keep having all these snow days!! I would love to share what we have been doing this week, but it wouldn't be the same without pictures! So stay tuned to see the artwork from this week show up on Monday! (or whenever I can get back to school!)

So what did I do on this snow day? Well, my husband and I ventured out after lunch today and the roads seemed pretty clear. We met my sister and two nieces at the Huntington Mall for some good deals! I saw several students there shopping too!! Hope you guys found something good! I think we will enjoy some Mexican food here in a bit, then come home to relax with Netflix or Mario Kart Wii! Two of our favorite snow day activities! I hope everyone had a happy and safe snow day! See you Monday!

Sixth Grade Pattern Designs

Hello again!!

During Fashion Design week, 6th grade art students took on the job of designing a new and exciting pattern! We learned that fashion design is not intended for clothes only. We created beautiful patterns for many items such as wallpaper, bedspreads, and lawn chairs! The possibilities are endless!

Check out the nicely planned designs!

Designed by: Zach
Possible use: "boy's shirt"

Designed by: Morgan
Possible use: "purse"

Designed by: Lauren

Great work 6th grade! I love your creativity!

As for this week... let's hope the snow stays away for now! I would really love for every class to have art this week! Thanks for visiting!

Design Week (finally!)

And yet another snow day has delayed the blogging of GCS Art Students! Thankfully, we are back on track, and you are going to love what we created last week!!

In case you haven't noticed, January is all about occupations in the art world! First we talked about illustrators, then we learned about inventors, and last week we learned about fashion design. Fashion design is not limited to run-ways, crazy outfits, and deathly high heels!! We discovered that "fashion" is all around us, and that somebody out there designed it!

Kindergarten art students got a chance to design their very own shirt or dress. We reviewed symmetry and patterns and colors. We carefully planned out the design with our pencil, colored it with crayons, then presented each one to the class. Then we voted (by applause) on our favorite patterns that we would love to wear some day! What do you think of these future fashion designers?

Left to Right: Carli, Travis, Abigail

1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade are students are in the middle of a semi-top-secret project!! Their design project for this week is part of a surprise that parents will be able to see on Open House night! The students had to design a belt-buckle that fit their personality. There were some very fashionable designs and themes on these buckles! Because you are a very valuable blog-reader, we will give you a sneak-peek at a few buckles! Make sure you don't miss Open House to see the entire look all together!

Gabrielle - 1st Grade

Jonathan - 2nd Grade

Selena - 3rd Grade

Jenna - 3rd Grade

Josh - 1st Grade

Lilly - 2nd Grade

Check back tomorrow for 6th Grade's Pattern Designs!

As you can see, we have many talented students at GCS! My goal for the months of January and February is to show students the many possible jobs where they can use their art skills to glorify God! Check back at the end of this week to see what profession we're going to explore! Thanks for visiting!

One-of-a-Kind Invention Sketches!

Ladies and Gentlemen, prepare to be astounded!!

Never before seen invention sketches by 4th and 5th grade art students have been found in the deep crevices of the art room!

The public may view these fragile sketches on their original, aged paper!

Voice Powered Wheel-Chair by Margeaux - 4th Grade

Safe Security Bird by Jacob - 5th Grade

Art Paint Gun by Cameron - 4th Grade

Auto-Jailer by Blake- 4th Grade

These valuable invention sketches have been compared to the breath-taking sketch books by the famous artist and inventor, Leonardo da Vinci! (seen below)

It seems that these young students once studied the work and creativity of this Renaissance Man.
Enjoy this amazing look into the mind of an inventor!

Mrs. Edwards' Resolution??

Alright, I know I promised to share my New Year's Resolution Illustration so here you go!

In 2010, I made the same recipes over and over again. Our meals started getting very boring.

I made a New Year's Resolution to find and cook 30 new recipes this year. I better start now!

By the end of 2011, I hope to be a culinary queen!

Happy New Year!

So does anyone have any easy recipes to help me reach my goal?!

Second Grade's Celebration

Second Grade did not illustrate last week, because we were too busy celebrating our win in the No "W" Contest!! We narrowed down our theme to 2 choices- popcorn or playdough. The final choice? Both!

It's not really a party without popcorn, so we decided we could have a Popcorn AND a Playdough Party! Each art student spent the whole art hour molding, creating, bending, shaping, and playing with Playdough.

Then we all took a dive into the sea of flavors of popcorn. The favorite was caramel corn of course! (I prefer the cheddar!) After we made a huge mess, we cleaned up as fast as we could. Whoever I saw working the hardest was able to pick their playdough color first... this was a big deal, because this was for KEEPS!

Wow! It was such a fun time, and I am so very proud of their hard work and excellent behavior!

Good work Second Grade!

1st and 3rd Grade Resolutions

After trying to upload these pictures for the last few days, I think it will finally work with me! Sorry for the delay, but the beautiful artwork is well worth the wait!!

(Check back at previous posts to read about our New Year's Resolution Illustrations in detail!)
First Grade really enjoyed the idea of being the illustrator! They were also very creative in thinking of goals for 2011! Here is what some of them came up with!

Grant- 1st Grade
Grant's goals is to be nice when he plays with others. (Nice action lines!)

Rachel- 1st Grade

Rachel's goals is to exercise everday. (I love the treadmill!)

Third Grade also came up with some beautiful story-book illustrations of 2011 Resolutions! Take a look at the details!! Very nice job!

Hannah - 3rd Grade
"In 2010, I would not help others or around the house."

"I made a New Year's Resolution to help others and around the house."

"By the end of 2011, I'm going to be the helping queen!"

Being selfless is a great goal to have, Hannah!

Jenna- 3rd Grade
"In 2010, I slept too much."

"I made a New Year's Resolution to start exercising."

"By the end of 2011, I will be strong."

It's definitely a good idea to avoid laziness, Jenna!

Everyone did a great job thinking of goals, now we just have to reach them! Pray for all the students at GCS that they will learn to lean on the strength of the Lord in their efforts to reach their 2011 goals!

Kindergarten Resolution Illustrations

Hello Friends!

Today Kindergarten art students learned a new word! Resolution. We also learned that drawing pictures of "goals" is different than drawing pictures of "girls!" :) They are too funny! We also learned about illustrators and their job of telling a story with pictures. We all thought about some goals and chose one to illustrate. There were some really touching and sweet goals that they came up with! Take a look at these beautiful works of art!

Gabe- Kindergarten
Gabe's goal is to tell Uncle Greg about the Bible. So sweet and heart-warming!

Carli- Kindergarten
Carli's goal is to share the Wii controllers with her brother. Good thinking!

I hope you enjoyed Kindergarten's post of their 2011 Resolutions! If you are near Huntington, WV stop by the Hall of Frame to see all of them!

New Year, New Goals!

Happy 2011!! I hope everyone had a great Christmas break and safe new year's! I really enjoyed my time off, but I'm glad to be back with all my favorite artists!

This week in art, we are ringing in the new year with some great goals! Art students are learning about illustration and what it means to tell a story with pictures. Each student had to think of a New Year's Resolution for 2011 and illustrate themselves reaching their goal in a story-book fashion . We cannot simply draw a stick person and know what the story is about! So I had to add the challenging requirement of NO STICK PEOPLE! Also, students were required to show some expression on the face of the characters.

Each day this week I will add "My New Year's Resolution" stories from two students in each class, so be sure to check back for more goal-reaching fun! Each story will show the picture first, then the sentence completed by the student. Enjoy!

Illustrated by: Noah- 5th Grade

"In 2010, I did not pray as much as I should have."

"I made a New Year's Resolution to pray before bed."

"By the end of 2011, I will pray every night."

Here's another one!

Illustrated by: Ian- 5th Grade
"In 2010, I played a lot of video games."

"I made a New Year's Resolution to play less video games and to spend more time with my family."

"By the end of the 2011, I will spend a lot of time with my family."

*So what goal did Mrs. Edwards make? Check back at the end of the week to see my story book!*

I'm praying that all of my students and their families have a wonderful year! I also hope you can reach all your goals with the help of our Lord! He has been so good to us!
