Friends in Motion!

Gesture Drawing is sketching the basic form of a body in motion. We try to do this lesson early in the year so students can use this technique in other projects. It really helps them learn how to draw people in another form other than standing up straight.

How it works:
Students take turns freezing in cool poses as their classmates sketch their form.
  • They start with the direction of the head
  • Add the tilt of the shoulders
  • A U-shape for the torso
  • The arms and legs are added in 2-part lines.
  • Hands and feet are represented with ovals in the direction they are pointed.
The result is a "test-dummy" looking figure that we can color and add detail to at the end of class. The students seem to really love this assignment as it gets them moving and also gives them more practice with sketching!

Hope you enjoyed our Gesture Drawings! We love drawing our friends in motion!

Second Grade Sketches of the Human Eye

(Note: Even though you are not viewing this until April 11, this post is actually from March 14, but Mrs. Edwards is sometimes "bloggically-challenged" and forgot to officially publish it!!)

Welcome to the art blog featuring the best students in the world!
It’s Second Grade’s turn to show you how to draw a realistic human eye! They created unbelievable sketches that included the following parts of the eye:
Iris                                    Pupil

Reflective Highlight           Eyelids
Eyelashes                         Eyebrows

Some of us decided to include wrinkles too! We also discussed that the eye can take on many different shapes depending on the expression on our face. Take a look at our beautifully and carefully drawn sketches of the human eye!

(There were 4 different eye expressions that the students were taught how to draw.)

Great work, Alex!!

Ellen's shading makes the eyes look very nice!

Mackenzi just about mastered the "closed eye"!

Micah's eyes look so real!
Didn't second grade do a wonderful job! Their quick learning and teachability is extremely... eye-opening!

One-of-a-Kind Invention Sketches!

Ladies and Gentlemen, prepare to be astounded!!

Never before seen invention sketches by 4th and 5th grade art students have been found in the deep crevices of the art room!

The public may view these fragile sketches on their original, aged paper!

Voice Powered Wheel-Chair by Margeaux - 4th Grade

Safe Security Bird by Jacob - 5th Grade

Art Paint Gun by Cameron - 4th Grade

Auto-Jailer by Blake- 4th Grade

These valuable invention sketches have been compared to the breath-taking sketch books by the famous artist and inventor, Leonardo da Vinci! (seen below)

It seems that these young students once studied the work and creativity of this Renaissance Man.
Enjoy this amazing look into the mind of an inventor!
